Our Surroundings

Riverside

Mutemwa is nestled directly on the banks of the mighty Upper Zambezi River, one of Africa’s most iconic waterways. This privileged riverside location not only offers breathtaking views and access to world-class tiger fishing, but also shapes the very environment around the lodge. Unlike the harsher inland bush, the river brings a more temperate climate, especially under Mutemwa’s signature canopy of big trees — a natural refuge of shade and coolness throughout the year.

The presence of the Zambezi creates a rich mosaic of habitats, attracting a vibrant variety of birdlife, aquatic species, and riverine wildlife. From hippos and crocodiles to otters and kingfishers, the river pulses with life, adding another layer of depth and diversity to your Mutemwa experience. Here, the rhythm of the Zambezi sets the pace — slow, steady, and alive with wonder.

Ngonye Falls NP

Just 80km upriver from Mutemwa Lodge, Ngonye Falls is one of Zambia’s best-kept secrets. Also known as Sioma Falls, this breathtaking cascade stretches across the Zambezi in a wide, horseshoe-shaped drop, creating powerful rapids and misty rainbows that dance above the gorge. Less crowded than Victoria Falls, Ngonye offers a more untouched and intimate natural spectacle. The falls mark the point where the Zambezi River begins its dramatic journey through rocky gorges — and they form the highlight of one of our most popular Mutemwa safaris. A visit to Ngonye Falls is not just a scenic experience, but a journey through the heart of Zambia’s wild beauty.

Sioma Ngwezi NP

Located just beyond Mutemwa, the Sioma Ngwezi National Park is one of Zambia’s largest and least-explored conservation areas. With no fences separating the park from the surrounding wilderness, wildlife roams freely — and for generations, animals have used the undisturbed land where Mutemwa now stands as a natural corridor to reach the Zambezi River, especially during the dry season when water is scarce in the park. Though Mutemwa itself is outside the park boundaries, this unique connection allows us to offer exclusive bush safaris deep within Sioma Ngwezi. We take guests into the heart of the park and set up a simple yet comfortable mobile camp, where the solitude and raw beauty of the wild create an unforgettable and truly off-the-grid safari experience — with no other people in sight.

Our Key Position

Kavango-Zambezi TFCA (KAZA)

Mutemwa lies in the heart of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), the world’s largest transboundary conservation area. Spanning five countries, KAZA protects vital wildlife corridors and supports Africa’s largest elephant population—over 220,000 strong—while promoting sustainable tourism and preserving key migration routes and habitats.
